🔧 Maintenance Schedule (Factory Recommended)
Ford Intelligent Oil Life Monitor (IOLM)
The 2022 F-150 uses an algorithm-based oil life monitoring system that calculates when an oil change is needed based on actual driving conditions — not just mileage. It accounts for towing, idling, short trips, and temperature. The system will display a message when it’s time. Reset the IOLM after every oil change by holding the OK button on the instrument cluster.

Fluids Reference
| Fluid | Spec / Type |
|---|---|
| Engine Oil | 5W-30 Synthetic Blend — Ford spec WSS-M2C946-B1 |
| Engine Coolant | Motorcraft Yellow VC-13DL-G — do NOT use green or universal coolant |
| Brake Fluid | DOT 4 Low Viscosity (LV) — spec WSS-M6C65-A2 — NOT regular DOT 4 |
| Transmission Fluid | Motorcraft MERCON LV — strictly no substitutions |
| Transfer Case Fluid | Motorcraft MERCON LV |
| Differential Fluid (F&R) | Motorcraft SAE 80W-90 Premium Rear Axle Lubricant |
| Power Steering | Electric power steering — no fluid required |
⚠️ Important — Brake Fluid: The 2022 F-150 requires DOT 4 LV (Low Viscosity) — this is NOT the same as regular DOT 4. Using the wrong brake fluid can degrade braking performance. Always verify you’re buying the correct spec before filling.
⚠️ Important — Transmission Fluid: Motorcraft MERCON LV is the only approved fluid for the 10-speed automatic. Generic ATF or MERCON V will damage the transmission. This is a common and expensive mistake.

Upgrade Tip: Many XLT owners upgrade to 20″ wheels from higher F-150 trims (Lariat, King Ranch) — all use the same 6x135mm bolt pattern and 87.1mm center bore so they bolt right on. A popular and cost-effective upgrade is picking up OEM takeoff wheels from dealers or Facebook Marketplace.

⚠️ Known Issues & Owner Tips
EcoBoost Carbon Buildup (TSB) — Direct injection engines like the 2.7L EcoBoost don’t spray fuel onto the intake valves, so carbon deposits can accumulate over time (typically 60k–100k miles). Symptoms: rough idle, misfires, reduced power. Fix: walnut blasting or chemical cleaning of intake ports. Many owners do this proactively at 80k–100k miles.
10-Speed Transmission Shudder / Harsh Shifts (TSB) — Some F-150 owners with the 10R80 10-speed report shuddering or harsh downshifts. Ford issued multiple TSBs. Fix: transmission fluid drain/refill with fresh Motorcraft MERCON LV and a PCM calibration update at the dealer.
Oil Changes: More Often if Towing — The IOLM monitor may stretch oil changes to 10,000 miles in easy driving. If you tow regularly, follow the 5,000-mile interval regardless of what the monitor says. Many experienced F-150 owners use 5,000 miles as their personal rule of thumb.
Aluminum Body — Corrosion Awareness — The F-150’s aluminum body panels don’t rust like steel, but the steel frame does. In snow belt states, spray the frame and undercarriage with a fluid film or similar rust inhibitor annually to protect it.
Ford Pass App — The 2022 F-150 is compatible with the FordPass Connect app (remote start, lock/unlock, vehicle health alerts, tire pressure monitoring from your phone). Free to use — set it up on delivery.
